Rotary Completes Another Community Project
On
Saturday, April 8th we completed a Spring Clean up of our assigned
section of Route 6. With a good turn out of members, the task
was completed quickly. The work session started with a great
breakfast at Tyler Hospital and then the crew started their cleanup
effort. Also aiding in this cleanup effort was a local Girl
Scout Troop. (Thank You Ladies!) Below is a picture taken at
the "Pre-clean up Breakfast.
OUTSTANDING ROTARY PROJECT
One of the most ambitious undertakings of the
Tunkhannock Rotary Club began in February 1954 when the
President of the Club, Clarence J. Fitze, announced that Rotary
would spearhead a project to install lighting for the
Tunkhannock Area High School Athletic Field. The idea was
expanded to create a memorial park to honor those who had served
their country.
Cecil Krewson, Jr. of Rotary was the chairman
of the steering committee which brought together various
segments of the community, including the American Legion, civic
organization, school representatives, coaches, students,
volunteer line crews from the Northern Pennsylvania Power
Company and the Rural Electrification Administration to plan for
the park. Rotarians provided "hands on" labor during the
installation of the poles
A financial drive for the lighting system
began with 34 members of the Tunkhannock Rotary pledging over
$4,000. The Rotary financial campaign raised approximately
$12,000 of the $37,000 required to complete the entire athletic
field project.
Local newspapers lauded the Memorial Park
Project as "one of the greatest community efforts in Wyoming
County history". On September 7,1954 the Memorial Park was
dedicated. Over 2,000 people gathered to witness the dedication
ceremony, which opened with P-51 Mustang fighter planes flying
over the field. A military gun salute, taps, and playing of the
National Anthem concluded the dedication.
This Project speaks highly of motivated
Rotarians getting involved with a valid community need and
joining hands with business and residents to get the job done.
Not only was the job completed but 27 years later Tunkhannock
Rotary again committed $3,000 toward the erection of a field
house at Memorial Park. Rotary again took a leadership role in
this project. Rotarian were again ahead of the times in
"Partnering to Improve Their Community".
