Since it's inception
back in 1905 by a small group of Chicago attorneys Rotary has been recognized
around the world as an organization that promotes truth, goodwill, friendship,
benevolence and equality for all who seek to provide service to and be served by
their fellow man. Indeed, Rotary International's adopted motto
during this Rotary Year "Service Above Self" will serve to remind
all Rotarians of their duties as Rotary club members regardless of their
geographic location around the globe.
This motto will ring true
throughout the upcoming year in the minds and hearts of each Tunkhannock Rotary
club member as we embark on a mission to continue to meet the needs of the local
and international communities as we answer the call to provide assistance
wherever and whenever possible.
We will continue to
support local community efforts to make Tunkhannock and its surrounding
communities a better, more productive, and enjoyable place to live by
contributing funds (raised through the hard work and dedication of club members)
to worthy causes and join with other local organizations to aid in the
betterment of the communities located here in the Endless Mountains region of
Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Our club will also
pitch-in, as we have done in the past, with hands-on work to help keep our
environment clean and safe. We will continue to support the youth of
Tunkhannock by maintaining sponsorship of the local Interact Club at Tunkhannock
Senior High and continue to sponsor other youth oriented programs to ensure that
young people are guided along the paths of truth and knowledge.
Internationally, the
Tunkhannock Rotary club (through its fund raising efforts and club member
donations) will support the efforts of the Rotary Foundation that provides help
both locally and abroad via matching grants and programs designed to target and
address the specific needs of domestic and international causes. This year the
Tunkhannock club will welcome two exchange students (a boy from Poland and a
girl from Japan) while a student from among our club's membership will
travel to India to experience cultures other than the American way
of life.
Becoming a Rotarian is
certainly a challenging and rewarding experience and I would encourage all who
read this message and who may be interested in becoming a Rotarian to speak with
a member of our club or me personally. We would certainly welcome the
opportunity to discuss the many facets of Rotary
and what it means to be a Rotarian!
Yours in Rotary,
Grace Luciani
President
